Policy Statement
Students participating in an approved program through a UofM education abroad office are registered for a block of placeholder credits, or a special section of an on campus course, which maintains their student status while abroad. Therefore, a Leave of Absence is not needed.
Students participating in a study abroad program not affiliated with the University of Minnesota during a required term (fall or spring semester) should request a formal Leave of Absence.
University of Minnesota students can apply for a learning abroad program while on a Leave of Absence and participate in a program during their first term as a reinstated student at the University, whether they are returning from a formal Leave of Absence or from an informal, temporary leave, under the following conditions:
- The student's college is willing to readmit / reactivate the student for the term that the student will be abroad. Ex: If a student wishes to go on a Summer program, their UofM student status must be made active effective Summer of that year. This must be done in advance, by the time Summer registration opens, to allow the LAC to register the student for their study abroad credits prior to departure.
- The student will be returning in good academic standing. (See the LAC policy on Academic Standing.)
- There are no additional barriers to participation, as related to the circumstances of the Leave of Absence.
