Kelsey Studies in New Zealand

About

Auckland, known as the "City of Sails," is New Zealand's most populated city with about a third of the country's entire population. The city offers a multicultural flair, natural beauty, a perfect setting for water sports, and tons of cultural events.

Study at the University of Auckland, a large, diverse, and urban university with a reputation for excellence in the sciences, engineering, and research.

Program Model

University Study

Housing & Meals

On-campus housing is included in the program fee and does not need a separate application. You will be placed in a single room at Carlaw Park Student Village. This is a self-catered apartment style student accommodation, so meals are not included in the program cost. The bedroom comes with a bed, a desk, a wardrobe and a notice board, and a linen package (sheets, towels, etc.). Each apartment has a kitchen with cooking facilities and lounge furniture.

Excursions

The University organizes a series of interesting activities, including ski trips, Maori cultural activities and sport days. In addition, there are over 100 student clubs for you to join.

You also have the opportunity to participate in a conservation volunteer weekend at some point during your studies. This opportunity to participate in a project and learn about the New Zealand environment is a highlight of the program.

Learning Outcomes

Studying at the University of Auckland will:

  • augment your cross-cultural understanding through interaction with New Zealand and international students, and community members;
  • experience New Zealand and international perspectives on academic disciplines through direct enrollment at the New Zealand host university;
  • and enhance your intentionality through independent—though supported—living and learning opportunities.

Sustainability Initiatives

The University of Auckland has multiple ways for students to engage in sustainability work. Generation Changemaker is a co-curricular program with a focus on sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship for incoming study abroad students. Drawing on human-centered design techniques, you will engage in workshops that focus on how individuals can take action, and find solutions to critical sustainability issues. The program has two innovation-focused workshops as well as an optional volunteer field trip to a nearby island.

Additionally, you can study sustainability in the classroom. The University of Auckland allows you to search for courses that relate to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Faculty & Staff

The University of Auckland has staff available to provide orientation, on-site support, and advising to help you adjust to a new educational system and integrate into campus life.

Program Structure

Program Level
Lower- and upper-division classes are available.
Courseload

Students must register for the equivalent of 12–17 UofM credits per semester.

Coursework

Classes - The University of Auckland offers courses in over 100 subject areas across eight faculties. There are several ways you can search for course options:

  • The Course Catalogue allows you to search for available courses by academic discipline and provides terms offered, brief course descriptions and prerequisites.
  • The University Digital Course Outline provides more detailed course descriptions (syllabi), including learning outcomes, assessment methods, method of delivery and more.
  • Popular course clusters lists classes in popular subjects, including classes specific to New Zealand, and classes consistently popular with visiting students.
  • Keep in mind: Semester 1 goes from late February through late June (Spring Semester at the UoM) and Semester 2 goes from mid-July through mid-November (Fall Semester at the UofM).

Study Abroad Brochure - The brochure provides a more general overview of studying abroad at the University of Auckland. Read about popular courses in various disciplines for study abroad students, other unique academic opportunities, and student life opportunities (clubs, events, sports, etc.).

Study Abroad Factsheet - The factsheet contains more detailed information on the application process, searching for courses, visa information, among other items in preparation of your time at the University of Auckland.

Grade & Credit Conversion Scale

You receive resident credit for the courses you take. Your grades factor into your University of Minnesota GPA and each course appears on your transcript with an A/F grade. Consult the Learning Abroad Center's Academic Policies page for more information.

Other academic information, as well as program dates, housing options, special classes, etc., can be found at Auckland's main study abroad page.

Global Identity

Global Identity: Connecting Your International Experience with Your Future is an optional 1-credit online course that helps you process your international experience and apply what you've learned upon your return. Global Identity gives you the opportunity to work individually with a trained cultural mentor, helping you articulate your newly acquired skills and differentiating you from your peers.

To access more information about the course, visit the Global Identity Course Information page.

Program Dates

Submit the online application and complete the assigned application checklist according to the appropriate deadline:

Orientation Dates & Locations

Orientation will be conducted in 2 parts: an online orientation—which is mandatory—and an in-person, program-specific session. You will receive more information about the online orientation via email. Failure to complete the online orientation will impact your ability to go abroad.

See below for tentative dates and times for your in-person session. You will be notified of the official date and time via email. You will receive applicable orientation materials via email approximately 1 week prior to the in-person session.

Fees

If you do not see a budget estimate for the term you intend to go abroad, the fee has not yet been finalized. We strive to post fees for this program at least 30 days prior to the application deadline. The Learning Abroad Center will delay the posting of some fees until enrollments, inflation, and exchange rates are determined. Note the average increase in fees will be 3–10%. Program fees are based on estimates and may change depending on international economic factors.

Fees or tuition from home institutions may be added to or differ from the University of Minnesota Learning Abroad Center fees listed on this page.

The New Zealand government also requires all students to carry an approved NZ-based health insurance policy. The policy costs approximately US$220 per semester. Details and instructions will be sent to students upon admission.
