Learning Abroad in Healthcare Management

Along with the Learning Abroad Center, CCAPS encourages HM students to seek rich life experiences. Studying abroad provides new perspectives and opportunities to observe different ways communities approach challenges. Students also gain a unique opportunity to serve and collaborate with our neighboring nations and their communities. The experience to work with each other across programs builds teamwork, strength, knowledge and compassion for the benefit of all. This experience truly shapes our future "servant leaders!".

Academic Planning

Review the following suggestions from the Healthcare Management (HM) Major before beginning your study abroad research. Learning abroad can provide you with an opportunity for personal growth and an understanding of health issues in the broader global community. A variety of learning abroad options are available to further support the analytical and problem-solving skills relevant to the business and the healthcare industry focus of this major.

Fulfill Requirements

HM Major Requirements

HM students can often find learning abroad programs and courses that are healthcare or business related that can fit into your major electives. Students in HM get to take 22 credits of major supporting electives. Historically, these have been business, public health, or healthcare-focused and at a 3xxx or higher. You will need to work with your HM adviser to discuss course options and get them pre-approved before you commit to your study abroad program and courses.  

Internships

Occasionally an internship abroad could count towards your HM internship requirement. More typically it can count towards your HM electives. Consult with your HM adviser for more information.

Liberal Education Requirements

You can fulfill liberal education requirements while abroad. Consult the U Credit Abroad Search for more information.

Academic Planning by Year

Timing your study abroad opportunity so it works for your schedule and your major can be a challenge. You and your advisers must carefully evaluate and plan course sequencing into any study abroad experience.

It is best to begin with the end in mind. Identify when you are planning on doing your required HM internship and discuss with your adviser how the search will affect your timing. It may seem convenient to go abroad before your internship, but keep in mind you will need to prepare your materials and interview before your internship.

Freshman Year

Start thinking about incorporating a study abroad experience into your academic program.

Sophomore Year

Meet with your HM academic adviser to determine appropriate course equivalencies for Liberal Education requirements and major elective options.

Junior and Senior Years

• During these years, you are most likely focusing on taking courses that apply to the major.
• Instructor-led, short-term winter break, May or summer sessions or complete semesters are options.
• Meet with your HM academic adviser to determine the appropriateness of courses.

Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS)

If you plan to participate in a program where you may have interaction with patients, complete the Global Ambassadors for Patient Safety (GAPS) online module. This interactive online workshop developed by the Pre-Health Student Resource Center will help you:

• prepare for your experience abroad
• use your experience abroad to make a positive impact on your health program application
• consider the legal and ethical boundaries that should guide your activities while abroad
• understand your own limitations as an unlicensed student

College/Department Scholarships for UofM Students

CCAPS students can apply for CCAPS Collegiate scholarships in addition to other Learning Abroad Center scholarships.
