While you prepare for your semester or year abroad, don't forget to make plans to vote. It is important and possible for your voice to be heard even though you will be abroad during elections.
Register as an Absentee Voter
Students studying abroad during election cycles are eligible to register as absentee voters. Keep in mind:
- Request your absentee ballot approximately 2–3 months in advance of election days.
- You should register to vote from the address you currently consider home—either where your college/university is located, or your permanent address.
- Ballots should generally be mailed back at least one month in advance of election day to ensure that your vote will be counted.
Minnesota specific absentee voting information can be found at the Minnesota Secretary of State website.
General absentee voting information can be found at the Federal Voting Assistance Program website.
