Program Structure

This is an affiliate program. You receive resident credit for the courses you take. Your grades factor into your University of Minnesota GPA and each course appears on your transcript with an A/F grade. Consult the Learning Abroad Center's Academic Policies for more information.

The International Chinese Language Program (ICLP), based at National Taiwan University (NTU), and the TKU Chinese Language Flagship Program, based at Tamkang University (TKU), in Taipei, Taiwan, provide intensive Chinese language instruction in a Mandarin-speaking environment. Consult the University of Minnesota's Chinese Flagship program website for more details on eligibility. The University of Minnesota's department of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) works directly with you about the application process for this program. Contact our campus Chinese Flagship adviser, Claudia Hasegawa, for more details about the programs, the application process, and how you can fulfill the Chinese Flagship summer study abroad requirement.

Coursework

Summer Programs

ICLP

You will enroll in 12 semester credits during the 9-week program. Coursework consists of a combination of small group and one-on-one instruction. While speaking is a core component of the ICLP curriculum, all classes provide comprehensive training in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Coursework may include reading materials, recorded audio materials, written assignments, and speeches.

TKU

You will enroll in 10 semester credits during the 8-week program. Coursework consists of a combination of small group and one-on-one instruction. While speaking is a core component of the TKU curriculum, all classes provide comprehensive training in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Coursework may include reading materials, recorded audio materials, written assignments, and speeches.

The Chinese Language Flagship faculty will determine the equivalency of coursework taken abroad to Chinese coursework offered on the UMTC campus.

Dates Details

There is a two-part application process for both ICLP and TKU. You will apply through the Learning Abroad Center website as well as through either the ICLP or TKU website.

Visit ICLP's website, or TKU's website, for program dates and application deadlines. Also consult with your Chinese Flagship adviser for additional information about program dates and deadlines.

Orientation Dates & Locations

Orientation consists of several sessions, all of which are created to support your preparation to go abroad:

  • Online Health & Safety Orientation: This asynchronous module can be accessed in your LAC checklist and is mandatory.
  • Chinese Language Flagship Orientation: UofM-specific information will be covered (academic planning, finances, etc.).
  • Affiliate Provider Orientation: This orientation will cover program-specific information from the host institution. You will receive information directly from either ICLP or TKU regarding a pre-departure orientation leading up to your departure.

The Learning Abroad Center also offers 2 optional orientations:

Fees

If you do not see a budget estimate for the term you intend to go abroad, the fee has not yet been finalized. We strive to post fees for this program at least 30 days prior to the application deadline.

University of Minnesota participants pay the program fee instead of on-campus tuition and fees for the term they are abroad.

What Is the APAAC?

Students participating on affiliated programs are charged a program fee that is inclusive of the affiliate's program fee, University of Minnesota Advising, Placement, Academic, and Administrative Costs (APAAC), and international health insurance. The APAAC covers:

  • Application processing
  • Advising services, orientation
  • Course registration
  • Grade transfer and posting for resident credit
  • Program billing and assistance with financial aid (when applicable)

Based on these additional services and benefits, the total program fee may be higher than the affiliate's published program fee.

Billing & Payments

Visit Billing for information about the billing process for application fees, deposits, and program fees.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Visit Financial Information for information on using financial aid and scholarships for study abroad.

Bridging Loan

Bridging Loan, a no-interest/no-fees loan that funds the confirmation deposit and/or flights cost, is available for this program for eligible students going abroad during an eligible term.

Apply Now

Complete

After you submit your application, you will receive an email notification confirming that your application was received. Submitted applications are assigned an application checklist, which will include the following items:

Submit directly to host institution:

  • ICLP Summer Flagship application (note this is different from the standard ICLP summer program)
  • TKU Summer Flagship application (note this is different from the standard TKU summer program)

These are Learning Abroad Center/Chinese Language Flagship programs that are offered in partnership with ICLP and TKU. You will complete application materials for the Learning Abroad Center and receive follow-up information from either ICLP or TKU. Detailed descriptions and instructions for submitting each checklist item are included on the application checklist assigned to you. You will return confirmation materials to the office that requested them (Learning Abroad Center, ICLP, or TKU).

Once your application checklist is complete, your application is reviewed by ICLP or TKU. You will be notified of an acceptance decision by ICLP or TKU. If accepted, you will be assigned a confirmation checklist by the Learning Abroad Center, which you will complete to confirm your participation in the program. If at any point you decide not to continue with the application process, log in to your Learning Abroad Center application and submit a cancellation request.

Next Steps

  1. Upon submitting the online application, you will receive an automated email message indicating your application was received.
  2. Follow the instructions on your application checklist to submit all of the items. Your application is not considered complete until all items on your application checklist are either received or waived.
  3. Complete the affiliate program's application requirements as applicable.
  4. Your completed application is reviewed by our program team. If nominated for participation, the Learning Abroad Center contacts the affiliate's staff to notify them of your status.
  5. You will be notified of an admission decision by email. If admitted, you will be assigned a confirmation checklist. Log in to the online application to review the confirmation checklist and submit the required items.
  6. Do not pay the affiliate’s confirmation deposit. The affiliate accepts the Learning Abroad Center’s deposit as indication of confirmation. The Learning Abroad Center deposit is submitted by completing the Confirmation and Payment Agreement found on the confirmation checklist assigned to you.
  7. If you decide not to continue with the application process, log in to the online application and submit a Cancel Request. You must also notify your affiliate of your cancellation.
