Study business culture and operations in Taiwan, a global hub for innovation and technology. You'll gain invaluable insights into how Taiwanese companies operate locally and on the global stage, as well as develop a broader understanding of Chinese society and business. You will also learn basic Chinese language skills, all while immersing yourself in rich and ancient Taiwanese history.

Housing & Meals

You will be accommodated in either a dormitory or a local hotel, depending on the group size. Taiwan offers convenient access to food at all hours and locations, so meals are not included in the program fee. We strongly encourage you to explore and savor the delicious array of local cuisine during your stay in Taiwan.

Academics

This course is designed to provide you with an immersive environment to gain an understanding of business culture and operations in Taiwan. Through a combination of class meetings, invited speaker talks, and excursions, you will learn how Taiwanese companies operate on a local and global scale as well as develop socio-cultural understanding of Chinese society and relate business issues to larger social contexts. This course will also teach you basic Chinese survival language skills. Prior Chinese experience is not a requirement to enroll in this course.

Program Leader

With a PhD in linguistics, Dr. Yufen Chang brings a wealth of academic expertise and a passion for cultural immersion to the program. Her extensive teaching background makes her a dynamic educator who is equipped to guide students through a holistic learning experience. Her personal and professional journey is deeply rooted in her Taiwanese upbringing, providing an authentic and invaluable perspective for UofM students.

Program Fee

May 2024 Cost of Participation.

The program fee includes tuition, in-country program related transportation, International airfare, housing, some meals, entrances to course-related excursions and site visits, program administration, and international health insurance.

If you are registered for less than 13 credits, or if you are a non-UofM student or a UofM graduate student, you will be charged tuition for this course in addition to the program fee. Notify the Learning Abroad Center if this applies to you.

* Immunizations Note: This estimate is based on approximate cost of travel-related vaccinations and medications required for entry or recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Your costs may be higher or lower depending on your travel clinic, the specific immunizations and medication prescribed, and your insurance coverage.

Prepare

Be aware: All programs require a $50 application fee. This fee will be charged to your student account upon submission of an online application.

If you do not currently have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months past your return date, or are still needing to apply for a new one, start the process as soon as possible. Visit the UofM Passport Office website for more information.

The COVID-19 vaccine series is strongly recommended, pursuant to CDC guidelines, but not required for participation in this program.

You will be charged a $50 application fee for each application you submit.

Next Steps

  1. After you complete all required application checklist items, you will receive an automated email message indicating your application is ready to be reviewed.
  2. Your completed application will be reviewed by the program leader in the sponsoring college/department.
  3. If admitted, the Confirmation & Payment Agreement form will be added to your checklist. Complete this form to secure your spot on the program. By submitting the form, you also give your approval for the program deposit to be billed to your UofM student account.
  4. Complete the confirmation checklist, which include the following items in additional to program-specific forms:

    • Health Information Form
    • Online Health & Safety Orientation
    • Release & Waiver
  5. You will receive information about additional steps from the sponsoring college/department.
