About

Brazil is known for its dense rainforest and gorgeous coastline. Brazil is also known for its civic action and activism that challenges persistent economic inequality, environmental degradation, and the systemic oppression targeting marginalized populations. This program centers community engagement, intercultural communication, and human rights awareness through exploration of communities (e.g., places, people, and organizations) and their actions to claim power, assert independence, realize interdependence, and work for justice. We will travel to specific sites of power and resistance to understand the importance of empowering communities on multiple fronts. Meetings with students, faculty, activists, community leaders, and teachers around Espirito Santo will offer you the opportunity to understand the different concerns in Brazil and the many efforts happening around the state to strengthen and sustain communities.
