About

Once the seat of an empire, today’s London has reinvented itself as an artistic, financial, and intellectual power. An extraordinarily multicultural city, London is home to royalty and immigrants, the working class and the avant-garde. It is Medieval, Victorian, and modern, interspersed with expansive parks and charming gardens. London is Europe’s largest city—in area and population—yet easily explored by the extensive underground network of the legendary “Tube.” As the capital city, it is the center of political issues, such as Britain’s relationship with the European community, increasingly assertive nationalities of Scotland and Wales, and the political complexities of Northern Ireland.

The BFA Actor Training Program is a required part of the UofM BFA Acting Program, where your will study in London during the first term of your junior year.

Program Model

Study Abroad Center

Housing & Meals

Housing is provided in comfortable, well-equipped apartments or homestay. You will receive your housing placement information about 2 weeks prior to departure. You will receive an Oyster Card (Tube pass) for the term, which is included in the program fee.

Apartment

If you choose the apartment option, you will share an apartment with 5–7 other students. Apartments include single or double bedrooms, bathrooms, and laundry. Meals are not included if you choose this option, but each apartment has a full kitchen. There are also numerous pubs and cafes within a short walk or "Tube" (subway) ride from the residence.

Homestay

If you choose the homestay option, you have a room to yourself. Breakfast and dinner are included during the week; you are responsible for lunch and meals on weekends. Homestays are typically a longer commute to the CEA CAPA study center in South Kensington.

Application Deadline

Application Deadline: April 1.

You must submit an application by this date or you risk not being included in the fall term cohort, which will affect your ability to continue in the BFA acting program.

Program Dates

The program in London runs from early September to mid December every year.

Academics

Receive 10 credits for the following BFA coursework in London:

  • TH3391 (3 credits)
  • TH3392 (2 Credits)
  • Th3393 (2 Credits)
  • LNDN/FOST 3239 (3 credits)

You are required to take 1–2 more courses from the available options at the CEA CAPA study center for a minimum of 12–15 total credits. These courses will transfer back as FOST courses, which will have to be petitioned with the BFA program or other major/minor programs for specific UofM credit, or submitted for liberal education credit review using the U-Credit system.

Excursions

You can also take advantage of CEA CAPA’s co-curricular program, Active Learning, which is a rich and varied calendar of events, lectures, walking tours, and reflective sessions. All Active Learning events relate to CEA CAPA’s student learning and development outcomes: Globalization, Urban Environments, Social Dynamics, Diversity, and Professional and Personal Development. Active Learning events empower you to analyze and explore London in a manner that is relevant to your studies and personal interests.

As a BFA student, you will participate in an acting residency in Stratford-upon-Avon or London, as a culmination of the learning in London.
