Africa and the Middle East

Ghana

University of Ghana (available through CIEE Ghana)

  • The University of Ghana has a Faculty of Agriculture with an active research program including three agricultural research stations
  • Study in areas such as ornamental horticulture, soil science, and weed and pest control
  • Opportunities are also available to do community projects, work in field research centers, or do internships

Kenya

MSID—International Development in Kenya

  • This “mini-Peace Corps” program offers credit through coursework, research, field placements, and internships
  • Work along-side host nationals on development projects
  • Internships are individualized

Senegal

MSID—International Development in Senegal

Costa Rica

Universidad Nacional Autonoma (available through IFSA-Butler Costa Rica)

  • The Univesidad Nacional Autonoma is located in the beautiful city of Heredia just outside the capital city of San Jose
  • Take an advanced Spanish course and additional regular university courses including opportunities in areas such as environmental studies, ecology, and earth sciences

Australia

University Study in Australia: University of Melbourne

  • Study at the University of Melbourne, one of Australia’s leading universities
  • The University of Melbourne offers an undergraduate program in Horticulture with a wide variety of courses
  • Possible areas of study include plant breeding, arboriculture, garden history and contemporary design, horticulture of Australian plants, soil and water resources, landscape studies, and more

University of Tasmania (available through Butler Australia)

  • The University of Tasmania is located in one of the world’s most interesting ecosystems with nearly 30 percent of its terrain designated World Heritage area or national parks
  • The university is known for the academic areas related to the natural environment including those related to its unique flora and fauna
  • The university’s undergraduate program in horticulture offers opportunities including crop and plant physiology, horticultural production systems, soil science, and crop health management

New Zealand

Massey University (available through Butler New Zealand)

  • Study at Massey University, New Zealand’s largest university located in New Zealand’s second largest inland city
  • The university has a well-respected Horticulture program with courses in production and landscape horticulture, soil properties and processes, plant biology & pathology, and turf management

United Kingdom

University Study in the UK: Lancaster University

  • Lancaster University is one of the UK’s most respected institutions
  • Extensive course offerings in the sciences; provides several of the foundation requirements for Horticulture in biology, chemistry, physics and math
  • Students can also undertake an independent study related to horticulture

Non-Credit Opportunities

  • Non-credit  opportunities can be a great option for students who do not need academic credit but want to gain skills and experience abroad related to their field of study.
