Learning Abroad in Business

The Carlson School of Management believes that firsthand international experience in new countries, cultures, and business environments is essential to providing a comprehensive business education. That’s why Carlson introduced an international experience requirement for all undergraduates:

    • to instill motivation to become more globally competent;
    • to encourage mutual understanding, communication, and collaboration with colleagues and students abroad; and
    • to support your development as an authentic global business leader.

Beyond gaining a broader perspective about their discipline, employers know the study abroad experience helps students gain maturity, independence, self-confidence, and cultural sensitivity, characteristics essential for success in nearly every field.

    Academic Planning

Review the following suggestions from the Carlson School before beginning your study abroad research.

    Steps to Studying Abroad

It's never too early to start planning for your education abroad experience. The Carlson Global Institute has a team of advisers available to discuss your international education options.

    1. Complete the online International Experience 101 Overview modules. The modules provide an overview of the international experience requirement and useful information about choosing and financing a program that is right for you.
    2. Research Carlson program options and Learning Abroad Center program options. Review eligibility requirements, academics, locations, program features, and costs.
    3. Complete an online profile and contact the Carlson Global Institute to schedule an appointment, or simply stop in during walk-in advising hours. You may also wish to complete the Goal Setting Worksheet, and bring it when meeting with your adviser.
    4. Consult with your Carlson academic adviser. Discuss the completion of your other academic requirements, the timing of your international experience, and the type of coursework to take abroad so your experience abroad is integrated into your overall academic plan.
    5. Schedule a financial aid preview meeting with the Office of Student Finance by calling One Stop at 612.624.1111.
    6. Apply online for your chosen program and scholarships!

    Selecting a Study Abroad Program

The process of selecting a study abroad program is similar to selecting your major or minor. Your chosen study abroad experience should reflect your goals and interests and integrate with your academic and career plans. Begin at least 6 months in advance of your study abroad. It is never too early to start planning. With proper planning, study abroad can help you complete your Carlson degree requirements and prepare for your professional life in the context of today’s global economy.

    • Set some goals. There is not one program best suited for Carlson students. There are many good study abroad programs, and the best one for you depends on your goals and interests.
    • Prioritize your goals. Consider your long-term academic and professional goals, as well as your on-campus degree requirements.
    • Consider short-term and long-term programs.
    • Prepare academically. You may need to take language or other prerequisite courses for your chosen program. (Note: All Carlson programs and numerous LAC programs are offered in English.)
    • Give yourself time to research and talk to advisers and students who have studied abroad.
    • Strategically plan which classes you will take abroad. For example, electives can easily be filled abroad, and with advance planning, Carlson business courses and liberal education credits can also be fulfilled.

    Self-Designed International Experience

    • Carlson students also have the opportunity to design their own international experience for a minimum of 1 credit. Students can build upon personal contacts, a volunteer program, or other opportunities to pursue their own directed study project abroad. With prior approval, and Carlson faculty guidance, the self-designed international experience can be used to fulfill the Carlson IE requirement.
    • Non-credit opportunities can be a great option for students who do not need acacemic credit but want to gain skills related to their field of student. A non-credit option could form the basis for a self-designed international directed study experience.

    Intensive Language Programs

    See Language Intensive programs.

    • Many Carlson students pursue a second language to complement their major; international business co-majors are required to study two years of a second langauge
    • Begin your language study or work toward completing requirements for a language major or minor
    • Complete a semester of language on a short-term program or explore options to complete two or more semesters of language on semester long program
