Online Resources

The following resources may be helpful for identifying and evaluating programs and preparing for an opportunity abroad. This list is a sample of resources to illustrate the breadth of resources available online. Inclusion in this list does not indicate endorsement, as these websites have not been officially reviewed nor approved by the University.

  • GoinGlobal
    • GoinGlobal provides country-specific career and employment information including Country Career Guides, corporate profiles and general career resources for over 30 countries.
  • Handshake
    • Handshake is the University of Minnesota's career network for students, alumni, and employers with local, national, and international opportunities.
  • Abroad View Magazine
    • Abroad View is a magazine that covers a variety of topics related to international study and travel. It includes spotlights on specific study abroad programs and travel destinations as well as articles covering general travel tips, language, food, lifestyle, and health concerns.
  • Diversity Abroad
    • With a focus on connecting diverse students with international opportunities, Diversity Abroad Includes search engines for study, teach, intern, and volunteer abroad programs, as well as a variety of other resources like how-to guides, scholarships and financial aid information, and student deals and discounts. 
  • Escape Artist
    • Information for those interested in living abroad, including financial advice and investment information, real estate, international jobs, retirement abroad, and vacation rentals. The site also includes a compilation of maps from around the world and a directory of embassies and consulates.
  • Globalplacement.com
    • Global Placement allows you to search for internships around the world and provides your information to companies looking for interns. They offer additional services related to your internship, such as acquiring the necessary visa and accommodations.
  • Goabroad.com
    • A comprehensive travel resource for anyone interested in going abroad. It offers extensive search engines for work, intern, volunteer, and study abroad programs and has other helpful tools such as a currency converter, embassy directory, and search function for cheap international flights.
  • Go Overseas
    • This website has listings for many study, intern, volunteer, and teach English programs, most of which have ratings and reviews from past participants. It also features a number of gap-year programs and advice, as well as recommendations for other travel needs like hostels and visas.
  • Idealist.org
    • A website run by the nonprofit organization Action without Borders. Their mission statement says they are “independent of any government, political ideology, or religious creed.” The website allows users to search for internships, volunteer opportunities, jobs, classes, and other resources related to nonprofits. 
  • International Organization Affairs
    • This page, maintained by the US Department of State, re-advertises job vacancies with the United Nations and 60+ other international organizations.  You can also set up a profile and subscribe to weekly job alert emails.
  • International Volunteer Programs Association (IVPA)
    • An association of volunteer organizations that does not organize or run its own volunteer programs. IVPA can serve as a guide to anyone considering volunteering abroad, as it also has lots of information about choosing a program, funding it, and preparing for the trip.
  • The Paperboy
    • This website provides free access to international news, allowing users to search through over 6000 online newspapers from more than 180 countries. You can also search through U.S. newspapers and the overall “top” newspapers in the world. Some are in the native language of the country, and some are available in English.
  • Peace & Collaborative Development Network (PCDN)
    • PCDN is a hub for the global social change community, connecting over 36,000 individuals/organizations engaged in social entreprenuership, development peacebuilding, and related fields. There is a wealth of information of international and domestic internships, job postings, fellowships (funding), etc.
  • Transitions Abroad
    • Contains numerous articles, guides, and links to various programs and resources for living, working, studying, and traveling abroad. The Work Abroad section includes short-term jobs such as au pairing or farm work, as well as internships, teaching English, summer jobs, and volunteer work.
  • U of Michigan International Center
    • While some of the information on this university website applies only to U of Michigan students, there is also a lot of general travel information that could be helpful to anyone going abroad. Resources are divided into categories including work (short-term jobs or internships, volunteering, teaching, and ways to explore international careers), study, and travel. 
  • UN Volunteers
    • News, guide books, and research about international volunteering as well as an alphabetical listing of almost 200 international volunteer organizations and programs.
  • Job Rank
    • jobRank.org is an international employment directory and search engine selecting, ranking and reviewing worldwide top job sites. jobRank.org (formerly 4icj.com) includes more than 9,500 career resources in 200 countries and is a free starting point to find the best job sites in every country.

Teaching English Abroad Sites

  • Dave's ESL Cafe
    • Features resources for teachers and students of English as a second language, such as language forums, grammar lessons, and quizzes. Also includes many job postings for teaching English abroad.
  • DoTEFL
    • Global directory of TEFL courses where you can also find information on teaching English abroad and online, TEFL jobs, and TEFL resources.
    Go Teach Abroad
    • This website is part of GoOverseas.com, and the programs they list are reviewed and rated by other teachers. You can search by region or country to find jobs and programs for teaching English abroad. There is also a job board where you can view teaching jobs posted most recently.
  • Teachabroad.com
    • Part of GoAbroad.com, this site is updated daily and allows you to search a directory of over 27,000 international teaching opportunities. It also lists featured programs as well as TEFL certification courses and information.
  • Tefl.com
    • The TEFL.com Jobs Database is the world's largest source of worldwide jobs for the ELT professional. It provides up-to-date job postings and lets you apply instantly online. You can also get information about becoming TEFL/TESL certified and post your resume for potential employers.
  • teflSearch.com
    • The teflSearch.com database is an unbiased and clear search site for information on teaching abroad by doing everything from interviewing teachers, to creating guides on paying taxes.
