Curriculum Integration Sustainability Retreat

Introduction to Study Abroad Curriculum Integration Workshop

Date: October 10, 2008
Time: 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Location: Presidents' Room, Coffman Memorial Union, Twin Cities Campus

This workshop helped faculty, advisers, and student support staff better understand how study abroad fits into the academic programs of their students. Over the last 7 years, the education abroad offices on all four campuses have collaborated with faculty and academic advisers across the University to integrate study abroad into each academic unit.

Participants learned more about:

  • The basics of study abroad at the U of M: who does it, where they go, what they learn, why President Bruininks wants at least 50% of all undergraduates to study abroad by the time they graduate;
  • Communicating the value of study abroad to students;
  • Determining learning outcomes for study abroad;
  • Assisting students to fit study abroad into their academic plan;
  • Support from the Learning Abroad Center staff: design or update a Study Abroad Major Advising sheet at a special working session from 12:30–2 p.m.

Time: 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
Location: McNamara Alumni Center, Twin Cities Campus

Intended for those faculty, advisers, and staff that work with or are familiar with study abroad advising or programming.

Breakout sessions:

  • Developing faculty-led short term programs
  • Learning Outcomes: Advising for Goal Setting
  • Panel of students that have studied in the United Kingdom

Large Group Activities:

  • Discussion on a new definition of education abroad for the U
  • Progress towards the University of Minnesota's goals for learning abroad
  • Keynote speaker Gerald Rinehart, Vice Provost for Student Affairs

Sustainability Workshop

In May of 2005 the Office for International Programs and the learning abroad offices on all four campuses hosted a sustainability workshop. The event was exceedingly well received and productive.

One day after the Sustainability Retreat a group of faculty and staff came together to begin the process of internationalizing their degree programs. Participants in this workshop were either new to the concept of Study Abroad Curriculum Integration or their programs were yet to complete thge initial stages of Study Abroad Curriculum Integration.
