Program Structure

UW Madison Portugal is an affiliated program. You receive resident credit for the courses you take. Your grades count toward your University of Minnesota GPA and each appears on your transcript.  Consult the Learning Abroad Center's Academic Policies website for more information.

Enroll in this program for international students at the University of Coimbra, one of the worldís oldest universities. Coimbra features many exquisite cathedrals, monasteries, parks and gardens, and is famous for its twisting streets, terraced houses and fado music. With a population of approximately 100,000, Coimbra provides an intimate and stimulating environment in which to live and study.

Coursework

Choose a track based on language ability: the elementary level focuses on language; the intermediate level adds history, art, geography and contemporary Portuguese studies; the advanced level includes Portuguese linguistics and literature. Experienced Portuguese speakers may take regular university courses. Instruction is in Portuguese by Portuguese faculty. Typical credits: 24–36 for academic year; 12–18 for fall or spring semester.
