“I wanted to learn how to do everything myself; I didn’t want to have everything planned for me.”

—Erin G.

Erin spent a semester at Wollongong University in southeastern Australia. She is a political science major, and took coursework in her field from Australian professors. The experience helped her gain confidence in an international environment, and allowed her to see some of the beautiful scenery that Australia has to offer.

In her political science courses, Erin learned about the Australian perspective on political systems, the media, and development. “It was more international. Even my Politics in the Media class had more Australian things in it than you would get here. And it was interesting hearing about the US from a different point of view, because we’re here, and we just take things for granted. They discuss things there about the US that we wouldn’t think to discuss here.”

Erin also took a course on women and society in Australia. Because she found the content so interesting, she decided to start a minor in women’s studies when she returned to the University of Minnesota. “I had never taken anything that focused a lot on women’s issues. One thing I remember is that we talked a lot about childcare. The system that they have in Australia, I guess, is pretty similar to what we have here. It was just really interesting to learn about it. I feel like you can talk naturally about women’s issues as a woman, so it was just interesting.”

Erin lived in a house on the campus of the University of Wollongong with both Australian and international students. “I picked it because I wanted to learn how to do everything myself; I didn’t want to have everything planned for me. That was good, because I was kind of independent, but I was surrounded by other students.” She felt that she gained confidence and the ability to navigate new situations. “It forces you to learn how to be social, and make connections with people. I’m more comfortable around new people and social situations.” To sum up her experience, Erin said, “It’s the most exciting thing you could ever do.”
