“I see the greater need for Americans to become civically engaged, and also to learn more about the world.”

—Anthony D.

Anthony participated in a program titled Emerging Democracies: Lessons from South Africa, which was offered during May Session by the Office for Multicultural and Academic Affairs. As a political science major, Anthony chose a program that centered on the political process, but his main reason for participating in the trip was his desire to visit South Africa. The program consisted of student-determined topics and activities, focusing on the grassroots political movement that brought an end to Apartheid.

In South Africa, Anthony learned about aspects of politics that were very different from American approaches, including grassroots organizing and civic engagement. In addition to 40 hours of in-class learning, students had an opportunity to learn through field trips and volunteer work. The program participants chose to visit the African National Congress, research the contributions of Nelson Mandela, and volunteer in a rural South African community. Anthony enjoyed the flexible structure of the course, and felt that it contributed important perspectives and alternative approaches to his study of political science at the University of Minnesota. "I see the greater need for Americans to become civically engaged, and also to learn more about the world."

Anthony felt that his experience in South Africa opened him to the possibility of a career in politics. When he returned, he sensed a need for US citizens to become more civically active, learn more about the world, and learn about themselves. Anthony hopes to enter law school after completing his undergraduate studies, which he sees as a step toward his involvement in that process.

Anthony had a very positive experience interacting with South African people and their culture. He was impressed with the inclusive nature of South African media regarding its multilingual audience. He also found that there were many similarities between himself and the South African people. Anthony felt the majority of his learning took place during his free time, in which he was able to interact with South Africans on a more intimate level. Through those interactions he learned about who South Africans are and how they view the US. Because of his experience, Anthony gained skills in relating to people who are different from him, and he feels that he now knows himself better.
