Travel to the three most economically and culturally vibrant cities of China - Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai - to learn firsthand the unique development challenges facing policy and planning professionals in designing sustainable and livable urban environments in the some of the largest and fastest-growing urban economies in the world. China has revamped its urban landscape since opening its major cities to trade with the outside world in the late 1970s and faces challenges of providing adequate housing and transportation, clean air and water, and sufficient jobs and recreational outlets to millions of urban residents. China is undergoing a demographic “bubble”  which is leading to population expansion and fast economic growth, all as policy makers struggle to keep up with ongoing regulatory needs. During a ten-day visit to the three three cities, students will visit organizations working on urban development issues, including projects innovating new social and environmental designs.

Course Description

Students will enroll in PA5890 (graduate) or PA4490 (undergrad) for 3 credits. In this course, students will meet with government, academic, and nongovernmental organizations to learn about different policy and planning challenges and innovations, and economic and environmental aspects of urban development. This course meets elective and global policy area requirements for the Humphrey School degrees. Approved for Global Perspectives (Theme) and Social Sciences (Core)

Program Leaders

The program will be co-led by lecturer Dr. Sherry Gray and Associate Professor Dr. Zhao Zhirong from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Excursions

The program will include visits to government, academic, and nongovernmental urban planning and development agencies and other related sites in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing.

Housing and Meals

Accommodations will be dorm style or shared hostel or hotel rooms (typically 2 persons per room). Most meals are included in the program fees. Typical Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing food will be served, with vegetarian options. Wi-Fi may be available.

Estimated Cost

The estimated program fee is $2,500 and includes tuition and registration fees, housing, meals, local transportation, and international health insurance. It does not include international airfare, passport and visa, and personal travel. Please check with the program leaders for further details. International airfare can range from $1600 to $2000 per person (fly into Hong Kong, depart from Beijing).
