Description
Learn about water, landuse issues, and rural communities in the context of China's rapidly changing society over three weeks and earn three credits. Visit the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Forbidden City in Beijing. Visit the 2008 Summer Olympic site and discuss the "footprint" of this area.
From Beijing travel to Sichuan University in Chengdu to experience the contrast between China's ancient history and modern development; learn about water, landuse and rural issues facing the world's most populous country; conduct discussions with governmental and non-governmental organizations in Sichuan; interact one-on-one with Chinese faculty members and students at Sichuan University; and explore a 2,000 year old dam that still operates today.
From Chengdu travel to Shanghai to explore the historic Bund district and witness recent changes in land development including the unprecedented growth of skyscrapers in the historic port city.
Faculty Leader
Dr. Dorothy Anderson, Department of Forest Resources, Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor, leads students on this three-week field study. The TA will be BenJee Cascio, Masters International candidate at the University of Minnesota.
Curriculum
Instruction is in English by University of Minnesota and Sichuan
University faculty. The program offers a 3 credit undergraduate
or graduate level course through the Department of Forest Resources.

Open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Applications reviewed
until March 24, 2008.
