Intercultural Engagement grants are offered for activities that engage both international students and returned study abroad students with a focus on intercultural engagement and student development.
Funding requests up to $500 will be considered for the 2007-2008 academic year. The proposed activities must be completed by May 30, 2008.
Eligibility
Faculty and staff in academic departments, collegiate units, and advising offices of all campuses of the University may apply.

Application deadline: Monday, October 15, 2007
Intercultural Engagement grant proposals should be no more than 2 pages and must include: a description of the activity including its scope, purpose, intended audience, and the roles of those involved, a proposal for the sustainability or long-term effect of the activity, a timeline and budget.

Review Criteria
Intercultural Engagement grant proposals are assessed according to the following criteria:
- The activity’s focus on engaging both international students and returned study abroad students
- The activity’s potential to serve as a model that might be shared with other units
- The activity’s sustainability either through a lasting impact or a commitment to repeat the activity with departmental/unit funding in the future
- The department/unit’s ability and willingness to share the outcomes of their activity with University of Minnesota colleagues and to present and Study Abroad Curriculum Integration events
Sample Grant Activities
The following are examples of activities that may be covered by a grant. It is not exhaustive of all the possibilities.
- Weekly International Friendship Coffee Hour inviting international students, returned study abroad students and other students with international interests for coffee, cookies and conversation. (Grant covers coffee, cookies and printed publicity.)
- Student writing contest on intercultural experiences, with top entries to go on departmental website. (Grant covers prizes for winners.)
- Weekly bag lunch series in which international students and returned study abroad students speak about their experiences or home country to faculty and other students in the department. (Grant covers beverages and printed publicity.)
- Departmental display case with information for study abroad and international students including photos from students, student profiles, etc. (Grant covers purchase of glass-enclosed case and permanent materials to go in it.)
