2008-2009
"Innovation for Broader Engagement" grants will be offered for activities to increase faculty and staff involvement in and awareness of study abroad at the college, department or unit level. Successful proposals should enhance the culture of study abroad within a unit or department by engaging faculty or staff.
Funding requests up to $500 will be considered for the 2008-2009 acadmic year. The proposed activities must be completed by April 15, 2009.
Eligibility
Faculty and staff in academic departments, collegiate units, and advising offices of all campuses of the University may apply.

Application deadline: Friday, October 3, 2008.
Innovation for Broader Engagement grant proposals should be no more than 2 pages in length and must include: a description of the activity including its scope, purpose, intended audience, and the roles of those involved, a proposal for the sustainability or long-term effect of the activity, a timeline and budget.

Review Criteria
Innovation in Broader Engagement grant proposals are assessed according to the following criteria:
- The activity’s focus on integrating study abroad into the undergraduate curriculum
- The activity’s potential for impact on the overall culture of support for study abroad among faculty and staff of the unit/department
- The activity’s potential to serve as a model that might be shared with other units
- The activity’s sustainability either through a lasting impact or a commitment to repeat the activity with departmental/unit funding in the future
- The department/unit’s ability and willingness to share the outcomes of their activity with University of Minnesota colleagues and to present at Study Abroad Curriculum Integration events
Sample Grant Activities
The following are examples of activities that may be covered by a grant. It is not exhaustive of all the possibilities.
- Training workshop for all new advisers in a college. (Grant covers room rental and lunch.)
- Weekly bag lunch series in which returned study abroad students speak about their experiences to faculty and other students in the department. (Grant covers beverages and printed publicity.)
- Overhaul of study abroad information on departmental website. (Grant covers a specified number of hours of a web consultant to assist the department.)
- Research project on the impact of study abroad on graduates of the department. (Grant covers undergraduate research assistant.)
- Departmental faculty retreat. (Grant covers lunch plus off-campus facilities rental.) Retreat might include topics such as the following:
- Using international students and study abroad returnees as classroom resources
- Promoting study abroad
- Advising on study abroad
- Organizing/leading a short-term study abroad program
- Creation of departmental study abroad materials. (Grant covers printing costs.)
- Event for faculty and staff to tell students about their own experiences abroad. (Grant covers pizza and printed publicity.)
