Curriculum Integration Grant Opportunities

We are pleased to announce two grant opportunities for University of Minnesota faculty and staff, the Intercultural Engagement and Innovation for Broader Engagement grants. These grants are offered as part of the Study Abroad Curriculum Integration initiative and have been made possible by the University-wide Office for International Programs.

Intercultural Engagement grants are offered for activities that engage international students and returned study abroad students with a focus on intercultural engagement and student development. Innovation for Broader Engagement grants are offered for activities to increase faculty and staff involvement in and awareness of study abroad.

Applications are due at 4:00 p.m. on October 3, 2008. Activities proposed must be completed by April 15, 2009.

Introduction to Study Abroad Curriculum Integration Workshop

Date: October 10, 2008

Location: Presidents' Room, Coffman Memorial Union, Twin Cities Campus

This workshop helped faculty, advisers, and student support staff better understand how study abroad fits into the academic programs of their students. Over the last 7 years, the education abroad offices on all four campuses have collaborated with faculty and academic advisers across the University to integrate study abroad into each academic unit.

Participants learned more about:

  • The basics of study abroad at the U of M: who does it, where they go, what they learn, why President Bruininks wants at least 50% of all undergraduates to study abroad by the time they graduate;
  • Communicating the value of study abroad to students;
  • Determining learning outcomes for study abroad;
  • Assisting students to fit study abroad into their academic plan;
  • Support from the Learning Abroad Center staff: design or update a Study Abroad Major Advising sheet at a special working session from 12:30-2:00 p.m.
